Thalia’s Spook-n-Boobtacular Halloween Wrap-Up: Thirteen Movies, One Sacred Bathtub, and A Lot of Memories

Thalia
Thalia's Spook-n-Boobtacular Halloween Countdown

The complete 13-film retrospective, final ratings, festival awards, and a special tribute to the scream queens who made Halloween unforgettable.

My beautiful degenerates, the candles have burned down, the wine bottles are empty, the zombies have returned to their graves, and somewhere in the Halls, Theia is still trying to figure out why the treasury approved a fifteen-foot golden statue of Linnea Quigley.

BECAUSE IT’S FUCKING BEAUTIFUL, DARLING! THAT’S WHY!

HAHAHAHAHAHA!

Well, here we are. Thirteen days, thirteen movies, and one gloriously ridiculous Halloween celebration have come to an end. It’s the grand finale of the first-ever Thalia’s Spook-n-Boobtacular!

And what a fucking adventure it was.

When Gary and I first discussed putting together a thirteen-day celebration of horror, cult cinema, and the gloriously questionable delights of the exploitation industry, I had a fairly simple vision. We’d watch some ridiculous movies, enjoy a few beautiful women, laugh at some terrible dialogue, and perhaps discover a forgotten little treasure or two along the way.

I certainly didn’t anticipate awarding eleven stars to a bathtub, seven stars to an exploding hooker, and zero stars to a movie that somehow managed to earn two stars in its individual categories.

I didn’t expect to spend an alarming amount of time questioning David DeCoteau’s career decisions, either.

And I absolutely didn’t expect to commission a fucking monument.

But darling, that’s the beauty of these little adventures. Sometimes the most memorable moments are the ones you never could have planned.

Our first Spook-n-Boobtacular gave us some genuinely wonderful movies, a few spectacular disappointments, and more laughter than I could possibly fit into thirteen reviews. More importantly, it reminded me why I love this ridiculous corner of cinema so much.

So pour yourself something delicious, get comfortable, and allow your favorite wine-drinking Greek goddess to look back on thirteen days of glorious cinematic stupidity.

Because, my beautiful degenerates, we’ve got some fucking awards to hand out.

Thalia's Spook-n-Boobtacular Morella Strip 4

Thirteen Days of Beautiful, Ridiculous Cinema

One of the wonderful things about this festival was that we weren’t trying to assemble a respectable list of critically acclaimed horror masterpieces.

We wanted movies with personality. Movies that understood how to have fun. Movies that might be cheap, stupid, outrageous, or downright embarrassing but still possessed that wonderful little spark that makes you want to watch them again.

Some delivered spectacularly.

Others apparently misunderstood the assignment.

Here, for your continued entertainment, is our complete thirteen-film adventure.

Yes, my beautiful degenerates, some of those numbers are mathematically impossible.

No, I will not be accepting corrections.

THE SACRED BATHTUB TRIBUNAL HAS SPOKEN!

And now, let’s discuss some of the extraordinary achievements—and spectacular failures—that made this festival worth remembering.

Spook-n-Boobtacular Nightmare Sisters Hall Strip 4

The Sacred Bathtub Award: Nightmare Sisters

Oh, darling.

You knew we had to begin here.

Of all the movies we watched, all the scenes we celebrated, and all the wonderful women who graced our screens, one extraordinary cinematic achievement rose above the rest.

THE SACRED FUCKING BATHTUB!

David DeCoteau’s Nightmare Sisters brought Linnea Quigley, Michelle Bauer, and Brinke Stevens together for a gloriously indulgent sequence that has now become an officially recognized cultural treasure in the Halls.

And I don’t use that term lightly.

Well, actually, darling, I use it extremely lightly. But I mean it this time!

The movie itself is wonderfully stupid. The performances are playful, the premise is ridiculous, and absolutely nobody involved seems remotely concerned about making something respectable.

That’s precisely why it works.

But the bathtub scene?

Oh, my beautiful degenerates, that was something else.

Three iconic scream queens, a director who knew exactly what sort of movie he was making, and a scene that wasn’t in any particular hurry to end.

DAVID! YOU MAGNIFICENT BASTARD!

You understood the assignment!

You knew how to set up a scene, frame it properly, and let the performers do their thing!

And for your magnificent contribution to the cultural advancement of the Halls, Nightmare Sisters received eleven fucking stars.

Why eleven?

Because five wasn’t enough, darling.

And because I’m a goddess, not a fucking accountant.

Our Sacred Bathtub Award is therefore permanently established in honor of this glorious achievement. Future filmmakers may aspire to receive it, but the original shall forever occupy a special place in our collective affections.

Or at least until somebody builds a bigger bathtub.

Spook-n-Boobtacular Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers Hall Strip 5

The Chainsaw Championship: Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers

Fred Olen Ray, darling, you beautiful lunatic.

Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers was one of the most delightful discoveries of the entire festival, a movie so gloriously aware of its own ridiculousness that resisting its charms would have required considerably more self-control than I possess.

It gave us a wonderfully absurd detective story, spectacularly questionable characters, outrageous dialogue, and, of course, the magnificent chainsaw showdown involving Linnea Quigley and Michelle Bauer.

THE CHAINSAW FUCKING CHAMPIONSHIP!

HAHAHAHAHAHA!

And what I appreciate most about this film isn’t simply the spectacle. It’s the enthusiasm.

Everybody understands the joke.

The filmmaker knows exactly what audience he’s entertaining, the performers embrace the absurdity, and the whole thing moves along with a cheeky sense of humor that makes it impossible to take seriously.

It’s silly. It’s cheap. It’s outrageous.

And it’s fucking wonderful.

Five stars, darling. No appeals necessary.

Spook-n-Boobtacular Frankenhooker Review HS 6

The Most Magnificently Deranged Film: Frankenhooker

Frank Henenlotter, I don’t know what the fuck was going through your mind when you made Frankenhooker, but I sincerely hope nobody ever talks you out of having ideas.

What an extraordinary piece of nonsense.

A young man named Jeffrey Franken attempts to reconstruct his dearly departed fiancée using salvaged body parts, homemade scientific equipment, and a collection of spectacularly terrible decisions.

Oh, and exploding prostitutes.

Can’t forget those.

HAHAHAHAHAHA!

The movie gave us some of the funniest moments of the festival, from Jeffrey’s disconcerting approach to reconstructive surgery to the magnificent spectacle of bodies exploding after exposure to his experimental Super-Crack.

And then there’s Zorro.

Oh, poor Zorro.

Darling, I don’t think being struck by a flying human head was included in your professional development plan.

But the true revelation was Patty Mullen as Elizabeth.

What a wonderfully committed performance!

Her exaggerated movements, facial expressions, and gleefully bizarre physical comedy transform the resurrected Frankenhooker into something much more memorable than the movie’s outrageous premise might suggest.

It takes genuine talent to make a character like that so entertaining.

And Patty absolutely delivers.

When the movie ended with Jeffrey finding himself reconstructed in a very unexpected new body, I was practically falling off my chaise.

SEVEN FUCKING STARS!

Why seven?

Because fuck it, darling.

IT’S FUNNY!

Return of the Living Dead Spook-n-Boobtacular Hall Strip 4

Best Horror Film: The Return of the Living Dead

For all the wonderful stupidity we’ve celebrated, we must acknowledge that some movies deserve praise for being genuinely excellent examples of their genre.

Dan O’Bannon’s The Return of the Living Dead is one of them.

What a magnificent way to close our festival.

James Karen, Clu Gulager, Thom Mathews, Don Calfa, Beverly Randolph, and the wonderful ensemble of punk-rock misfits bring an enormous amount of personality to a movie that manages to be frightening, funny, disgusting, and surprisingly moving.

Tarman is a marvelous practical-effects creation. The zombies are genuinely dangerous. The dialogue is memorable, and the entire story unfolds with a wonderful sense of escalating catastrophe.

And who could forget the immortal words:

“SEND MORE PARAMEDICS.”

HAHAHAHAHAHA!

THE ZOMBIES ARE ORDERING FUCKING TAKEOUT!

It’s a perfect example of why horror comedy works when the filmmaker understands both sides of the equation.

The comedy makes us enjoy the characters, and the horror makes us worry about what happens to them.

The movie doesn’t merely contain zombies and jokes. It knows how to make both entertaining.

And unlike some of the films we’ve suffered through, it has actual fucking atmosphere!

FIVE STARS! ORGASMIC!

Oh, and one more thing.

Dan O’Bannon gives us Linnea Quigley dancing in a cemetery.

But we’ll be discussing our magnificent Linnea in just a moment.

First, there are some criminal offenses we need to address.

The Cinematography Crimes Department

My beautiful degenerates, we have a serious problem in the world of low-budget filmmaking.

Some directors apparently believe that if you hire attractive performers, it’s entirely unnecessary to let the audience actually fucking see them.

Take Stripped to Kill.

Here we had an interesting premise, a collection of performers, and plenty of opportunities to capture some entertaining scenes.

And what did the filmmakers do?

THEY TURNED EVERYTHING FUCKING RED!

Red lights! Red fog! Red fucking everything!

Darling, I appreciate atmospheric lighting as much as the next goddess, but if the audience can’t make out what’s happening, we’ve moved beyond atmosphere and into criminal obstruction of cinema.

I thought we’d witnessed the worst visual offense of the festival.

And then Gary handed me Spring Break Massacre.

Oh, Gary.

My sweet, wonderful, deeply misguided darling.

What the fuck were you thinking?

Apparently, director Michael Hoffman Jr. watched Stripped to Kill, observed the lighting problems, and decided that the solution was to bring out the fucking butter.

Spring Break Massacre Review Spook-n-Boobtacular Hall Strip 1

IS THAT VASELINE?!

IS THAT BUTTER?!

IS THAT FUCKING JIZZ ON THE CAMERA LENS?!

HAHAHAHAHAHA!

The entire movie looks as though somebody attempted to photograph a slumber party through a freshly greased biscuit.

And the tragedy is that the film had some attractive performers who deserved considerably better presentation.

But beautiful women and a slasher title aren’t enough to make an eighties B-movie tribute.

You need atmosphere. You need personality. You need entertainment.

Spring Break Massacre had practically none of those things.

It didn’t have the charm of its inspirations, the ridiculous enthusiasm of the best exploitation movies, or even the good sense to use Linnea Quigley for more than a glorified cameo despite putting her name on the fucking DVD cover.

THE ONLY THING MASSACRED WAS MY FUCKING PATIENCE!

Zero stars.

CURSED!

Yes, it earned one star for cheese and one for boobs.

And still received zero overall.

DON’T QUESTION MY FUCKING MATHEMATICS!

Spook-n-Boobtacular Bordello of Blood Hall Strip 3

The Biggest False Advertising Award: Bordello of Blood

Now, darling, I realize we need to be careful about judging a film entirely by its title.

But when somebody calls a movie Bordello of Blood, I believe it’s reasonable to develop certain expectations.

Vampires?

Certainly.

Beautiful women?

Absolutely.

A bordello?

Well, one would fucking assume so!

Instead, we got a film that seemed almost determined to avoid delivering the very sort of outrageous spectacle its title suggested.

Dennis Miller’s sarcastic detective Rafe Guttman provided plenty of entertainment, and I certainly appreciated Juliet Reagh’s memorable little contribution.

But the rest?

IS THIS A BORDELLO OR A FUCKING NUNNERY?!

HAHAHAHAHAHA!

Angie Everhart! Erika Eleniak! A whole cast of potentially entertaining characters!

And somehow we managed to spend most of the movie watching everybody remain remarkably modest for a story about an underground vampire brothel.

Two stars.

One for Dennis Miller’s sarcasm.

One for Juliet Reagh’s contribution to the proceedings.

And I believe that’s a perfectly reasonable fucking assessment.

Spook-n-Boobtacular Dr Alien Hall Strip 5

The David DeCoteau Lifetime Achievement in Wrong Fucking Decisions Award

And now, my beautiful degenerates, we arrive at an award very dear to my heart.

One honoring a filmmaker who gave us some genuinely wonderful moments during our festival.

A filmmaker who understands the pleasures of ridiculous science-fiction comedies, outrageous exploitation cinema, and, most importantly, the Sacred Bathtub.

Ladies and gentlemen…

DAVID FUCKING DeCOTEAU!

DAVID! DARLING! COME RECEIVE YOUR FUCKING AWARD!

First, let me say something sincere.

I genuinely appreciate your work.

Nightmare Sisters was a glorious discovery, and Dr. Alien gave us another delightfully stupid evening featuring Linnea Quigley, Michelle Bauer, Judy Landers, Edy Williams, and a boy with what appeared to be a fucking penis worm growing out of his head.

I laughed. I enjoyed myself. I awarded the movie four stars.

But darling, I also spent most of Dr. Alien begging you to stop cutting away from the entertaining scenes and returning to what felt like an episode of Leave It to Beaver.

DAVID! YOU DIRECTED NIGHTMARE SISTERS!

YOU KNEW HOW TO LET A SCENE DEVELOP!

WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED?!

And then Gary and I made an extraordinary discovery.

Apparently, over the years, our beloved David has directed an almost unbelievable collection of television movies featuring people making spectacularly incorrect decisions.

The Wrong Housemaid.

The Wrong Baby Daddy.

The Wrong Marriage.

The Wrong Obsession.

The Wrong Life Coach.

The Wrong High School Sweetheart.

The Wrong Blind Date.

The Wrong Cheer Captain.

The Wrong Valentine.

The Wrong Prince Charming.

The Wrong Mr. Right.

The Wrong Fiancé.

The Wrong Real Estate Agent.

The Wrong Cheerleader Coach.

The Wrong Stepfather.

The Wrong Wedding Planner.

The Wrong House Sitter.

The Wrong Cheerleader.

The Wrong Tutor.

The Wrong Mommy.

The Wrong Boy Next Door.

The Wrong Stepmother.

The Wrong Teacher.

The Wrong Cruise.

The Wrong Man.

The Wrong Crush.

The Wrong Student.

The Wrong Child.

The Wrong Roommate.

DAVID! YOU’VE BEEN DIRECTING THE WRONG FUCKING EVERYTHING!

HAHAHAHAHAHA!

DARLING, AT WHAT POINT DO YOU START QUESTIONING YOUR OWN DECISIONS?!

YOU’VE MADE MORE WRONG TURNS THAN A FUCKING BROKEN GPS!

And then, as if that weren’t enough, we discovered that the man responsible for the Sacred Bathtub has also spent years directing made-for-television Christmas romances!

Christmas!

DARLING!

WE USED TO HAVE LINNEA QUIGLEY AND MICHELLE BAUER!

NOW WE’RE HAVING MISUNDERSTANDINGS UNDER THE FUCKING MISTLETOE?!

Oh, David.

My sweet, wonderful David.

I realize you’ve maintained an impressively prolific career, and I sincerely respect that. Filmmakers have to work, audiences change, and television offers opportunities that weren’t always available in the old direct-to-video days.

But as the resident goddess of questionable cinema, I have one very important request.

PLEASE MAKE THE RIGHT FUCKING BATHTUB AGAIN!

And with that, David DeCoteau receives our inaugural Lifetime Achievement in Wrong Fucking Decisions Award.

Congratulations, darling.

You’ve earned it.

And if you ever make The Wrong Bathtub, I expect a fucking producer credit.

Return of the Living Dead Spook-n-Boobtacular Hall Strip 2

The Linnea Quigley Tribute — A Goddess Among Scream Queens

My beautiful degenerates, I’ve saved this final honor for somebody who helped turn our little festival into something genuinely special.

A woman whose performances appeared throughout our thirteen-day celebration, connecting some of its funniest, strangest, and most memorable moments.

A woman who has spent decades entertaining audiences in horror films, cult comedies, and the wonderfully disreputable world of low-budget cinema.

LINNEA FUCKING QUIGLEY!

OH, DARLING!

WHERE DO I EVEN BEGIN?!

The disappearing lipstick trick in Night of the Demons.

The glorious Sacred Bathtub in Nightmare Sisters.

The chainsaw championship in Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers.

The delightful surprise of discovering her in Dr. Alien.

And finally, her unforgettable cemetery performance as Trash in The Return of the Living Dead.

What a remarkable collection of moments.

But here’s something I want to make clear.

Linnea isn’t memorable simply because she’s beautiful, or because she’s never been afraid to embrace the outrageous nature of exploitation cinema.

She’s memorable because she brings personality to it.

There’s a playfulness to her performances, a willingness to embrace strange characters and ridiculous situations without looking down on the material. She understands the particular magic of low-budget horror, where imagination, enthusiasm, and a little shameless audacity can accomplish things that money alone never could.

And those qualities have helped make her a beloved figure among generations of genre fans.

During this festival, I’ve celebrated plenty of beautiful performers. Some gave us spectacular scenes, others delivered wonderfully silly performances, and a few managed to make otherwise disappointing films considerably more enjoyable.

But Linnea kept appearing.

And every time she did, I found another reason to smile.

So it seems only appropriate that we conclude our little celebration by recognizing her contribution.

Ladies and gentlemen, my beautiful degenerates, esteemed residents of the Halls…

I give you…

THE LINNEA QUIGLEY MONUMENT!

Thalia pulls a magnificent purple velvet curtain aside, revealing an enormous golden statue surrounded by roses, candles, and laurel wreaths.

Linnea Quigley Patron Saint of Spook-n-Boobtacular

HAHAHAHAHAHA!

LINNEA! DARLING! THANK YOU FOR MAKING HORROR SO MUCH FUCKING FUN!

Yes, it’s enormous.

Yes, it’s gold.

And no, Theia, you cannot have it removed!

Some things are simply too important to leave to the ordinary rules of interior decoration.

And if the treasury has a problem with the expense, they can submit a complaint to the Sacred Bathtub Tribunal.

I’ll get to it eventually.

What Thirteen Movies Taught This Goddess

For all the ridiculous awards and outrageous jokes, my beautiful degenerates, this festival actually reinforced something I believe quite strongly.

A movie doesn’t have to be perfect to be wonderful.

It doesn’t even have to be particularly good.

Some of my favorite moments came from films with tiny budgets, questionable scripts, absurd dialogue, and special effects that probably cost less than an afternoon of groceries.

But those films had something.

Personality.

Imagination.

A willingness to entertain their audiences without being embarrassed by what they were making.

That’s why Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers was so much fun. It’s why Frankenhooker earned seven stars despite defying every reasonable standard of cinematic judgment. It’s why Nightmare Sisters received an impossible eleven-star decree.

And it’s why Spring Break Massacre received nothing.

A low budget can be charming.

A ridiculous premise can be delightful.

Bad acting can even be entertaining when everyone involved is committed to the joke.

But boredom?

Darling, boredom is the one cinematic crime I simply cannot forgive.

And that, ultimately, is what Spook-n-Boobtacular was about.

Not merely celebrating beautiful women, horrible monsters, or ridiculous movies, although we’ve certainly done plenty of that.

It was about having a fucking wonderful time.

About finding joy in the strange, obscure, and occasionally forgotten corners of entertainment.

About refusing to believe that every movie discussion has to be stiff, serious, and desperately concerned with appearing respectable.

Sometimes I want a beautifully crafted horror masterpiece.

Sometimes I want a chainsaw duel.

And sometimes I want three magnificent scream queens in a bathtub.

THERE’S ROOM IN MY HEART FOR ALL THREE, DARLING!

Spook-n-Boobtacular Nightmare Sisters Final Hall Strip

A Final Toast to My Beautiful Degenerates

And so we come to the end.

Thirteen movies, thirteen reviews, a mountain of Hall Strips, and more outrageous memories than I could possibly recount in one article.

To the wonderful actors and actresses who brought these ridiculous stories to life, thank you.

To the filmmakers who created something memorable with little more than imagination, enthusiasm, and whatever money they could scrape together, thank you.

To Linnea Quigley, Michelle Bauer, Brinke Stevens, Patty Mullen, and the many other performers who helped make our festival so entertaining, thank you.

To David DeCoteau, thank you for the Sacred Bathtub.

And darling, please stop making the wrong fucking decisions.

To Gary, who helped select our thirteen films and gave me this wonderful opportunity to share my thoughts with all of you…

Thank you, darling.

Even if I still haven’t forgiven you for Spring Break Massacre.

HAHAHAHAHAHA!

And finally, to you, my beautiful degenerates.

Thank you for joining me.

Thank you for laughing with me, celebrating the good movies, enduring the terrible ones, and appreciating the wonderfully ridiculous spirit that makes places like Titanquisitor worth visiting.

We’ve had ourselves a marvelous little Halloween adventure.

And while our Spook-n-Boobtacular has officially concluded, don’t you dare imagine that I’m finished exploring the delightfully inappropriate corners of cinema.

Oh, no, darlings.

Not even fucking close.

Because February is coming.

And your favorite Greek goddess has already begun planning something special.

THALIA’S PLEASURING VALENTINES.

Fourteen days.

Fourteen movies.

A whole new collection of romantic disasters, beautiful performers, and spectacularly questionable decisions.

Theia has already requested that I avoid describing it as a cultural emergency.

No promises, darling.

But that’s a story for another day.

For now, raise your glasses one last time.

TO THE SCREAM QUEENS!

TO THE MONSTERS!

TO THE MOVIES THAT MADE US LAUGH!

TO THE SACRED FUCKING BATHTUB!

And to every magnificent bastard who ever picked up a camera and decided to make something wonderfully ridiculous.

THANK YOU FOR MAKING HORROR FUN!

With all my love, a thoroughly unreasonable amount of wine, and absolutely no intention of behaving myself, wishing you all a very Happy Halloween,
