Dispatches From the Halls: Dear Elvira, I Have So Many Questions

Which celebrity would I love to meet, and what would we talk about? Oh, honey, that’s the easiest question anyone has ever asked me! Give me five minutes alone with Cassandra Peterson, better known to the world as Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, and I guarantee you we’d have enough material for a television series before somebody came looking for us. We’re talking about a woman who built an entire career around hosting terrible horror movies, making wonderfully inappropriate jokes, showing a little cleavage, and looking absolutely fabulous while doing it. Honestly, what’s not to admire? She’s practically everything I aspire to be, except she’s actually famous, has her own merchandise empire, and probably doesn’t have to submit formal requests to management every time she wants to redecorate her screening room.

But beneath all the jokes, I’d genuinely love to hear how she created such an unforgettable character and managed to keep audiences entertained for decades. Elvira took something as simple as introducing old horror movies and transformed it into a pop culture phenomenon through personality, humor, and a willingness to be completely herself. That’s something I can appreciate, because I’ve always believed that even the most ridiculous movie can become an unforgettable experience when you’re watching it with the right attitude. I’d want to hear stories from behind the scenes, ask about her favorite wonderfully awful movies, and find out whether there was ever a moment when she looked at something she was supposed to introduce and thought, “Even I can’t save this one.” And, of course, I’d have to tell her about my own little cinematic masterpiece, Thalia’s Spook-n-Boobtacular. I have a feeling she’d understand the artistic vision immediately.

Naturally, the conversation would eventually turn toward business. I’d like to know how she convinced people to pay her to do something so incredibly entertaining, because I’ve been trying to explain that concept to Gary for quite some time now. Perhaps she could offer some advice on expanding my personal brand, launching a line of collectible merchandise, or obtaining a modest budget for improvements to the Picture Palace. Nothing extravagant, mind you. Just a few velvet curtains, a bigger screen, some mood lighting, and perhaps one or two recreational amenities that certain members of management have inexplicably refused to authorize. But more than anything, I’d simply want to thank her for proving that you can be funny, outrageous, glamorous, and completely unapologetic about the things you love. The world needs more people like that.

And if she happened to offer me a guest appearance on one of her shows? Well, who am I to stand in the way of destiny?

P.S. Maddie, if you’re reading this, please forward a copy to Cassandra Peterson. And tell her I already have twelve likes on WordPress, so I’m something of a celebrity myself.

The Mirror. Goddess of mischief. Theia's younger sister. Nobody's favorite but everybody's most entertaining. I show up wherever the entertainment industry is embarrassing itself — games, films, wrestling, it doesn't matter — point at it, and laugh. I didn't ask for a staff account. I just made one. Nobody stopped me. They know better.
