Out of the Furnace Review

William McPherson2 Comments

Russell Baze (Christian Bale) and his younger brother Rodney (a multiple tour Iraq war vet played by Casey Affleck) have spent their entire lives in the northeast rust belt in one of those towns kept alive by the local steel mill and a lot of hard earned calloused hands.  Russell is seemingly content with this, as he works in the same mill that his father (who is dying of cancer) did and makes due with what he has, and keeps going in spite of some personal hardships such as a freak car accident…

THE MONKEY6 Comments

The story revolves around the Zisman family and how the family deals with a set of tragic events.  Irving Zisman (Knoxville) is a "free" man following the death of his wife of several years and is ready to get back into the single life.  His daughter Kimmie is about to go to jail again for violating parole and wants him to take his 8-year old grandson to North Carolina to be with his deadbeat father.  From there it's more or less about how Billy and his grandfather Irving eventually start to…

THE MONKEY

I had been hearing about this film for quite some time.  Having made its run of the festival circuits in 2011 to a pretty good response I was surprised to see it take close to two years to get it's theatrical release.  Though with Wingard and Barrett's involvement with the well received horror anthology V/H/S/, it seemed that the film was actually gaining momentum in the time before it's release.  Unfortunately I never got a chance to see the film before it left theaters but did manage to check…

stle is the best movie to come out of 2013, but it is for damned sure the most fun one to have made it to the big screen. Wow, what a fun ride that was. I am going to spend the next few hundred words or so just completely gushing about this movie with no pretense of objectivity or any other journalistic credos so read on at your own risk if you will.  I always get a little nervous going into a movie that has received so much critical acclaim, as sometimes such acclaim only serves to raise the…

Double Indemnity Review

William McPherson

I’ve been meaning to see Double Indemnity forever now, but only just finally got around to it after stumbling across a special edition copy in my school library. I’ve reviewed a couple other pieces of classic film noir on this blog and intend to do more. Film Noir is one of my favorite genres of film; it may in fact be my all time favorite, were it not for my love of classic westerns as well. When I think of the very abstract idea of cinema itself the mental picture I get is a smoky, black and…

The Wild & Wonderful Whites of West Virginia Review

William McPherson1 Comment

This kind of movie is normally far from my normal range of viewing material. I must confess my only reason for having seen it is due to it being a school assignment, and the only reason I’m writing about it is for the same purpose, so I figured, since this is kind of what I do anyway, that I might as well kill two birds with one stone and make two versions of this review, one for the professor, and one for you guys. This movie was produced by the same guys who brought you Jackass. Yes, that…

Memphis Heat Review

Long before the bright lights and pyrotechnics of today’s modern wrestling extravaganza there was already a thriving wrestling scene in America, several of them in fact, located in territories strewn across the United States, most of which falling under the dictum of the National Wrestling Alliance. One such territory existed in Memphis, Tennessee the birthplace of the blues, and of Rock N’ Roll. And at the same time that Sam Phillips promoted his new Rock N’ Roll stars like Elvis Presley and…

Brad Pitt stars as Gerry Lane, a former United Nations investigator, and leader of several small tactical forces, who is now retired from that line of work and attempting to enjoy a quiet life with his growing family when, you guessed it, the mother-trucking zombie apocalypse happens, again. If there’s one thing I’ve learned from watching movies such as this, is that in case of a zombie outbreak you want to have a job and a skill set that will help you survive and be useful in the aftermath of…

Good Will Hunting Review

William McPherson

In a way this movie is like Rain Man for jaded intellectuals. Will Hunting is every bit as advanced as Dustin Hoffman’s character was in areas such as possessing a photographic memory of every academic book known to man, and solving mathematical equations that would cause even Einstein to light his hair on fire. He also is just as emotionally regressed and unable to make effective decisions for himself, although in a markedly different and more easily concealed way than the aforementioned…

The following introduction is a little spoilery, but it doesn’t really reveal anything that will compromise enjoyment of the movie in my opinion, but anyway, read at your own risk, or simply skip down to the next one. Denzel Washington stars as undercover DEA agent Robert "Bobby" Trench, while Mark Wahlberg plays undercover Naval Intelligence officer Michael "Stig" Stigman. Together the two of them plot to rob a bank in which they think contains money belonging to a Mexican drug cartel that…

Planes, Trains, & Automobiles Review

William McPherson4 Comments

We all have our little rituals that guide us through our life. These are the things we do every day, week, month or year depending upon what it is we’re talking about. For every year since I was a small child around this time a year when it is approaching the Thanksgiving holiday I always make it a point to block out some time to sit down with my entire family and watch Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. It is one of those movies I find I simply cannot do without. I’ve long since memorized all the…

Pain & Gain Review

William McPherson2 Comments

The great movie ‘Fargo’ has forever strained my ability to trust any movie that claims itself to be a “true story”. Fargo did that in its opening credits as an inside joke on the audience (one that, according to legend actually inspired a person to go searching for the lost money in that story). The story of Fargo was completely fictional, but indeed, it was truly a story if you catch my drift. Pain and Gain though is not just “truly a story” though it is, according to everything I’ve been able…

We’re The Millers Review

William McPherson3 Comments

Lately Hollywood has been coming up with a plethora of very intriguing and potential filled ideas upon which could be made a great number of entertaining films. It’s just too bad that only a scant few of these movies have been able to rise up to the promise of their premise. A drug dealer whose life depends on his skills of deception and disguising himself as a family man with the help of a stripper, and two young dysfunctional teenagers is an interesting concept indeed, and one that could be…

The Untold History of the United States Review

“The West won the world not by the superiority of its ideas or values or religion (to which few members of other civilizations were converted) but rather by its superiority in applying organized violence. Westerners often forget this fact; non-Westerners never do.” - Samuel P. Huntington With this ten part documentary series (now with two additional episodes on the new DVD release) The Untold History of the United States, Oliver Stone has cemented his spot as America’s most affable raconteur of…

R.I.P.D Review

William McPherson2 Comments

When I was a child, I was a huge fan of the original Men in Black, so much so that when my dad was shopping for a new (new to us anyway) car the summer of my 12th birthday I talked him into getting the exact same 1980’s Ford LTD that was used in that movie. Call it effective marketing or just good timing but I found the combination of Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones and their classic buddy cop repartee to be most infectious. It was that relationship along with some really cool suits, and a fun…

Before Midnight Review

William McPherson2 Comments

Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy reprise their roles as the love-struck couple of Jesse and Celine here in this third installment of Richard Linklater’s “Before” series. Before we get into anything else, as expected, Hawke and Delpy continue to have astonishing chemistry together and are both very fine actors who deliver knockout performances here. In the previous two movies, they were still getting to know each other and playing a tantalizing and torturous game of romantic cat and mouse. In this…

Sleepy Hollow Review

Gary Smith

Based on Washington Irving’s “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” with a few poetic liberties, Sleepy Hollow puts a modern spin on the legendary tale of horror. Rather than his original role as a school teacher, Ichabod Crane (Depp) is now an investigator from New York sent to investigate murder in the farming community of Sleepy Hollow. There, he encounters several interesting characters, chief among them Katrina Van Tassel (Ricci), daughter of the wealthy farmer, Baltus Van Tassel. Along the way…

Van Helsing Review

For a movie I had no intention of watching in the theater, this was a pretty good movie. The legendary monster hunter Van Helsing (Jackman) must go to Transylvania to fight Dracula and help Anna (Beckinsale), who’s family can not enter heaven until Dracula is dead (I suppose that would be the best word to use). Along with appearances by Mr. Hyde (of Dr. Jackyl and Mr. Hyde fame), the Wolf Man, and Frankenstein’s monster, it’s a virtual who’s who of the monster world, complete with an ugly little…

Resident Evil Review

Based on the popular video game series by the same name, Resident Evil is about the Umbrella Corporation and their secret biological experiments. Living in the house above “The Hive," Alice (Jovovich) awakens following an accident down below. Long story short, a specially trained commando team (which includes Rodriguez) is sent in by Umbrella to assess the situation and shut down the supercomputer that runs the underground laboratory before the virus is unleashed on the outside world. Sleepwalkers Review

Gary Smith

What a painfully bad movie this is. Who wrote this crap? Stephen King took credit for this? You’re kidding me? The same guy that wrote shit like Misery, The Shining, Carrie, and The Green Mile? What did who do wrong here? Basically what we have, is these two people, a mother and son. Only they aren’t humans, they’re what’s known as sleepwalkers. No, not the people who get up and walk around while they are asleep, but rather some sort of giant, hairless dog looking things that suck the life force…
