Nintendo Wii U Review

Gary Smith

The next generation of game consoles began on November 18th with the release of Nintendo’s Wii U, and unfortunately for Nintendo their next gen console is comparable (slightly better) than the current generation of consoles from Sony and Microsoft. And that means that (if the rumored specs and developer talk is to be believed) when the next Playstation and Xbox hit the market (possibly this year). Wii U will be in a similar situation as Wii was. Wii U already isn’t getting highly anticipated…

King Kong (1933) Review

Gary Smith2 Comments

At its release in 1933, King Kong was quite a spectacle and a true blockbuster. And while it’s been almost 80 years since this film released, it is still quite a spectacle. Prior to watching this for the first time, I had previously seen the 1976 remake starring Jeff Bridges and Jessica Lange and thought it okay. I had also seen, and greatly enjoyed, the 2005 remake starring Naomi Watts and Adrian Brody. So I was more than familiar with the story of King Kong, but I had never seen the original…

Superfly The Jimmy Snuka Story Review

Gary Smith3 Comments

Jimmy Snuka’s prime as a wrestler was a few years before my time; my earliest memories of seeing the Superfly in action was during his early 90s WWF run where he was a solid mid-card act. As I got older and was able to acquire tapes and eventually the Internet, I was able to see some of Snuka’s older stuff from the late 70s to early/mid 80s and was able to appreciate what he meant for the business and why he was deserving of a spot in the WWF/E Hall of Fame. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame…

Journey Review

Gary Smith1 Comment

Journey was released on March 13, 2012 as a PSN exclusive and was met with very high review scores; most people seem to love it. So it was no surprise when the game was released in retail stores along with other thatgamecompany games “Flower” and “Flow” as “the Journey Collector’s Edition.” The game is so well liked that it was the “Game of the Year” for many outlets/people; even Amazon named it the 2012 Game of the Year (well the Collector’s Edition, but same thing). It’s a game that I had…

Assassin’s Creed – 3 Accipiter Review

Gary Smith

This is the final volume, so far, of the French comics to be released in English (all three volumes were just released in English back in October). A fourth volume came out in November in French titled “Hawk.” After finishing this volume, I really hope it doesn’t take another two volumes to come out before the series is printed in English again as I am into this story now. This one picks up where the second volume left off. This time around, another Assassin named Jonathan Hawk is in an Animus…

Assassin’s Creed – 2 Aquilus Review

Gary Smith

If you read my review yesterday of the first volume, then you know this is really where this series of graphic novels begin a serious departure from the storyline we play in the Assassin’s Creed games. Yes, the characters we met in the first game (Desmond and Lucy) and the second game on (Rebecca and Shaun) are all present but things are way out of synch between the games and this series. And you can’t even say “well the game just didn’t show this happening.” The game doesn’t show some of the…

Assassin’s Creed – 1 Desmond Review

Gary Smith

This is first volume of the French comic/graphic novel series of Assassin’s Creed books. This volume starts off with Subject 16 and an ancestor named Aquilus, but it’s very much about Desmond and Altair. It tells how Desmond was kidnapped and came to be at Abstergo, and shows some key missions of Altair’s. For the most part, this volume follows the events of the first game pretty well. Anyone who has played the first Assassin’s Creed will be able to easily follow along, although the book does a…

The Expendables 2 Review

Gary Smith

Back in September of last year, our Features Editor, Jules, posted the full review of the theatrical release of The Expendables 2. For the most part, I agree almost completely with his review of the movie and so reviewing the movie isn’t why I’m posting this today. Instead, this quick review isn’t a critique of the movie itself (since Jules has already provided that) but rather of the Blu-ray release. Now I should point out that I didn't see the movie when it was in theaters, and I mention that…

Citizen Kane Review

Gary Smith4 Comments

Citizen Kane is widely considered by many to be the greatest film ever made, and it’s certainly noteworthy for a number of reasons. It was the motion picture debut of Orson Welles, already a noted theater performer. Welles starred in, directed, produced, and co-wrote the movie, and as director he brought a number of innovative techniques to the film. The camera angles he used, the way he staged scenes, and the lighting, amongst other things, were all innovative. More importantly it all worked…

Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die Review

Gary Smith2 Comments

Willie Nelson is an undeniable American legend of Country-Western music. But there has always been more to Willie than his music; he’s an actor, a writer, and an advocate for several causes. He has written a few books before, both non-fiction and fiction, including an autobiography. This book is “musings from the road,” and that’s quite accurate. The book is completely random and has the feel of thoughts quickly scribbled on to paper on a bus ride. If you’re expecting perfect grammar and a…

(500) Days of Summer Review

Gary Smith

This is not a love story, or so the tagline goes. It’s also not a chick flick, which in this instance works for the films benefit. (500) Days of Summer is a romantic-comedy that is completely different from every other film in the genre, and that fact makes the movie worth watching and much more realistic. It’s the story of Tom Hansen (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and his relationship with Summer Finn (Zooey Deschanel) over the course of 500 days. Tom, a greeting card writer, is smitten with Summer…

A hit is placed on Vetter, and while the attempt to murder Vetter is thwarted, his wife Stacy (Jacqueline Obradors) is killed. Together with his partner, Demetrius Hicks (Larenz Tate), Vetter sets out for revenge and to bring down the Cartel’s and Diablo once and for all. They…

Death to Smoochy Review

Gary Smith2 Comments

If you enjoy dark and often obscene comedies, then Death to Smoochy is a must-own movie for you. Robin Williams is at his comedic best as former kid show host, Rainbow Randolph. Rainbow was ousted by Kid Net, after accepting bribes for the show. His replacement is the “squeaky clean”, Sheldon ‘Smoochy’ Mopes (Edward Norton), a fuchsia Rhino who’s catchphrase is “You can’t change the world, but you can make a dent.” The popularity of Smoochy’s Magic Jungle sky rockets to a national phenomenon…

Madden NFL 13 (Wii U) Review

Gary Smith

I reviewed Madden NFL 13 back in August and scored it a 4/5. It is a superb football game. I'm not going to write out a long review for the Wii U version because it doesn't need it. If you already own Madden NFL 13, then you don't need to purchase it again for the Wii U. Unfortunately, it isn't the definitive version of the game like I was hoping it would be. You can go back and read my previous review of the PS3 version for some things; commentary is the same and Connected Careers is the same…

WWE ’13 Review

Gary Smith1 Comment

Yuke's and THQ could a big step forward with the WWE license last year when they scrapped the RAW vs. Smackdown name and gutted the engine to give the series its first true overhaul in years. WWE '12 ended up being the best playing wrestling game of the generation thanks to the all the big improvements made. This year, Yuke's is back with WWE '13 and it's largely the same gameplay wise. That's not a bad thing. Annual titles get a lot of hate if they don't reinvent the wheel every year, but WWE…

Today, we'll be discussing Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation, the series first venture onto the Playstation Vita. This is also our first review of a Playstation Vita game here at Web of Paine, so hopefully you enjoy this review. With the Vita being the hi-def sequel to the PSP system, AC3 Liberation is one of the games that I was looking at to see the quality of the Vita's hi-def capabilities. Having experienced a mixed bag with some prior games, I was really looking forward to seeing some quality…

Assassin’s Creed III Review

Gary Smith2 Comments

I've not attempted to hide the fact that Assassin's Creed has been my favorite franchise of the current generation, or that Assassin's Creed III has been my most anticipated title of the year. I had incredibly high expectations going into this game, and truth be told maybe I had that bar set a little too high. Since the game's release, I've pumped into a little over 20 hours into the single player and I'm about 45% on the completion scale. I have a ton of stuff left to do, although I finished…

Dead Man Wins Election Review

Gary Smith

With Election Day just a few hours away, it's the perfect time to sit down and read a book that does a great job of showing just how useless politicians are and how corrupt many of these people are. This book is packed with tales of stupid public servants, corrupt elections, the idiocy of voters, and any other "wacky and unbelievable" thing you can think of. If, for whatever reason, you haven't already lost all faith in government and the idea of elections, then this book will probably help push…

Medal of Honor: Warfighter Review

Gary Smith

Today we will be taking a look at Medal of Honor: Warfighter, the follow-up to the 2010 title Medal of Honor and the continuation of the modern day reboot of the series. While I am a fan of shooters, I, to this point, have not had a chance to play any of the reboot Medal of Honor. Obviously I did spend some time with Warfighter over the past week, otherwise why would I be writing about it, right? Have to say it was a pretty solid experience. How solid, well let's get to it and find out. Quick…
