Rambo Review

William McPherson

The Rambo series is one that is both near and dear to my heart as a moviegoer who grew up in the early to mid 90s watching and re-watching each film at least a half a dozen times each, to give a modest estimate. Now though it is the year 2008 (at the time of this original writing anyway), at least 20 some odd years since ‘Rambo 3’ the last film in the former trilogy that began in the early eighties with First Blood parts one and two. The first thing I noticed about this movie is the title…

From Russia With Love Review

Hello everyone and welcome to the second in my series of reviews covering the James Bond film franchise. When last we left him, our hero was snug as a bug in a rug, in a boat with the lovely Honey Ryder drifting away the hours in the steamy Jamaican seas. All this of course after successfully foiling villainous S.P.E.C.T.R.E agent Dr No’s dastardly scheme for world domination and decimating his entire underground operation to boot. A tough day’s work for anyone no doubt, and one that might…

Righteous Kill Review

There seems to be two basic trains of thought on this movie among the different reviews I have read. No one, at least not many that is I would say, would argue that this is a great movie, however, camp one says almost in unison that Righteous Kill is at worst a bad movie made decent by the two greatest living actors of theirs or anybody else’s generation. Camp two argues however that since we have here in this movie, arguably the two greatest living actors of theirs or anybody else’s generation…

Burn After Reading Review

William McPherson

“Intelligence is Relative” Ah, those whacky Coen Brothers. They’ve done it again. Burn After Reading’s plot is such a cooked up, convoluted, utterly confusing, overly complicated and in many ways brilliant one that to reveal all the parts of it would be at once both counterproductive and, just downright hard to do in fact. I think the quote that bests sums it up was delivered by J.K. Simmons playing one of the CIA officials, who quips in a funny scene to one of his underlings “Report back to me……

The Wrestler Review

(spoiler warning - this review may contain slight spoilers) If there was to be one word to describe Randy ‘The Ram’ Robinson it would be this: addict. He is an intense abuser of alcohol and several different kinds of drugs, both recreational and otherwise, but that is not what I am talking about here. Robin Ramzinski, which is The Ram’s real name in the movie, is mainly addicted to acceptance, and, in whatever form he can find it, love. He gets his fill of that mostly from his primary job…

3:10 to Yuma Review

Daniel Evans (Bale) is a poor rancher trying to make it out West with his wife and two sons, and having a hard time making it work. Evans is figuratively and almost literally a one legged man in an ass-kicking contest (he lost one of his feet in the Civil War). His youngest boy has tuberculosis, and in order to pay for medicine, he had to take loans that he can’t make enough money to repay, as it’s not easy to raise good cattle with a drought. About to lose his small ranch and become homeless…

Dr. No Review

William McPherson

Hello everyone and welcome to the first in my series of reviews chronicling the James Bond movie franchise. Seeing as this is the first installment of this new project of mine I suppose now would be the opportune time to lay down the general modus operandi for all of you, my general audience. Over the Christmas holidays last year I was able to view most of the films of the aforementioned Bond franchise. Since then I’ve been able to fill in the blanks by seeing the few films I missed at that…

Terminator Salvation Review

William McPherson

There are a few odds and ends I should get out of the way before I begin this review. First off you should know that the version of the film I am reviewing is the directors cut release. I did not see the original theatrical cut, and thus cannot really say a whole lot about the differences here and whatnot, so please forgive me in that regards. Also, after watching this I, as per my usual pre-review routine, read around to see what the general critical consensus was on this movie, and found that…

The Expendables Review

William McPherson3 Comments

The Expendables is an easy movie to pick apart, if one were of a mind to do so, on several structural levels. However, this reviewer does not feel the need to do so. I for one like movies that aren’t ashamed of what they are, and also, movies that don’t pretend to be more than what they are either. The Expendables is a prime example of this sort of movie. It was advertised as a non-stop parade of explosions and shoot outs featuring a large collection of some of the most notorious action movie…

Gran Torino Review

“Ever notice how you come across somebody once in a while that you shouldn't have fucked with? That's me.” - Clint Eastwood as Walt Kowalski Clint Eastwood is not just an actor, he is an American institution. If they ever make a place on Mount Rushmore for iconic badasses his mug should be the first one etched up there, that is, if they can find suitably hard enough granite for his likeness. I, like many, grew up learning what it meant to be a ‘real man’ by watching movies like Dirty Harry, The…
