The search for cinema’s next James Bond appears to be approaching its long-awaited conclusion, with Amazon MGM Studios reportedly preparing to screen-test a select group of actors hoping to inherit one of Hollywood’s most recognizable roles.
According to reports from Variety, Deadline, and The Hollywood Reporter, the final round of auditions could begin in London as early as Friday, October 23, and continue into the following week. Among the actors reportedly under consideration are Callum Turner, Jack Lowden, and Josh O’Connor, although the precise number of candidates remains uncertain. Some reports suggest four finalists, while others indicate that as many as five actors could participate.
Turner, whose credits include Fantastic Beasts, Emma, and Masters of the Air, has been associated with the role for several months. Lowden, familiar to audiences through Slow Horses and Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk, has likewise emerged as a prominent contender. O’Connor, known for The Crown and Challengers, represents another intriguing possibility. The reported screen tests are expected to evaluate the actors’ physical capabilities, command of the camera, and delivery of dialogue, all essential qualities for a character whose appeal depends upon considerably more than his ability to wear a tuxedo.
Amazon MGM Studios has not officially confirmed the names of the candidates or announced when the next Bond will be revealed. The studio has previously emphasized its intention to approach the casting process carefully, recognizing both the character’s considerable cultural importance and the expectations surrounding his return.
The next installment will be directed by Denis Villeneuve, whose acclaimed work includes Arrival, Blade Runner 2049, and the Dune films. Steven Knight, creator of Peaky Blinders, is writing the screenplay, while Amy Pascal and David Heyman will serve as producers. The combination suggests an ambitious new chapter for a franchise that has remained a fixture of popular cinema for more than six decades.
Whoever secures the role will face the formidable task of succeeding Daniel Craig, whose five-film tenure concluded with No Time to Die in 2021. Craig’s interpretation emphasized physical vulnerability, emotional complexity, and a grittier approach to espionage, departing in several respects from the suave, occasionally playful characterization associated with earlier performers such as Sean Connery and Roger Moore.
The casting decision also carries particular significance because the forthcoming film will be the first developed under Amazon MGM’s new creative stewardship, following the transfer of creative control from longtime Bond custodians Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson. Beyond selecting a leading man, the studio must determine how best to preserve the qualities that have sustained the franchise while introducing 007 to another generation of moviegoers.
No official release date has been announced.
Theia’s Take
James Bond has a well-established identity, including a recognizable physical appearance, and I believe the next actor should honor that tradition. A handsome, dark-haired, distinguished British gentleman with the requisite charm, intelligence, and dangerous edge would suit me perfectly; reinvention is welcome in the storytelling, but I see little reason to make James Bond himself unrecognizable.
