Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 arrives Friday, October 23, 2026, but Xbox Game Pass subscribers hoping to jump into the latest installment without purchasing it separately are in for a disappointment.

Activision has confirmed that Modern Warfare 4 will launch as a standalone purchase, with Game Pass availability not expected until the holiday 2027 season. That means even Game Pass Ultimate subscribers will need to buy the game if they want to play at launch, a notable change from recent Call of Duty releases.

Developed by Infinity Ward, the new installment continues the rebooted Modern Warfare storyline, with Captain Price returning as a conflict on the Korean Peninsula threatens to escalate into a global confrontation. The game includes a full single-player campaign, traditional competitive multiplayer, and the returning DMZ extraction mode.

Platforms, Editions, and Pricing

Modern Warfare 4 launches on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC through Steam, Battle.net, and the Xbox PC ecosystem. There are no announced PlayStation 4 or Xbox One versions.

The standard digital edition costs $69.99, while the premium Vault Edition costs $99.99. The Vault Edition includes additional Operator cosmetics, weapon content, a season of BlackCell, and DMZ bonuses. A $30 Vault Edition upgrade is also available for eligible standard-edition owners.

Physical console editions are available, though buyers should check the retailer’s listing for their platform and edition. Players interested primarily in the campaign and standard multiplayer experience won’t need the premium edition.

Campaign and DMZ Early Access

Digital preorders provide access to two modes ahead of the official launch. Campaign Early Access began October 16, while DMZ Early Access begins today, October 20.

The early-access campaign features 16 missions spanning locations including Korea, New York, Paris, and Mumbai. DMZ returns with extraction-based gameplay emphasizing exploration, objectives, and surviving long enough to escape with valuable equipment.

Digital preorder bonuses also include the Hunter Killer Operator Skin, Gilded Pearl Camo Pack, and Inner Circuit M4 Weapon Blueprint. Xbox console players receive a special green treatment for the blueprint celebrating Xbox’s 25th anniversary.

What About Game Pass?

Activision’s announcement is explicit: Modern Warfare 4 will not be included in Game Pass at launch and isn’t scheduled to arrive until holiday 2027.

Existing Game Pass Ultimate subscribers can continue accessing earlier titles such as Black Ops 7, Black Ops 6, and Modern Warfare III, but those subscriptions won’t unlock the new release this Friday.

For anyone planning to play on day one, purchasing a copy is currently the only option.

Titan’s Take: I’ve never believed that every new Call of Duty needs to be an automatic purchase, especially when we’re talking about seventy dollars for the standard edition. The absence of day-one Game Pass access makes that decision even more important for Xbox players accustomed to getting recent installments through their subscriptions. On the positive side, I’m pleased to see Infinity Ward putting genuine emphasis on a full single-player campaign, something I believe this franchise should never treat as an afterthought. My advice is simple: if you’re excited about the campaign or already have a reliable multiplayer squad waiting, there’s plenty here worth investigating. Otherwise, there’s no shame in waiting for reviews, watching how multiplayer develops, and deciding whether the game deserves your money. The battlefield will still be there next week.
