Bungie dropped a big studio update today. Studio Head Poria Torkan and Marathon GM Josh Deane put out a joint statement that’s part apology tour, part roadmap, and honestly the most self-aware thing I’ve seen from the studio in years.
The headline news: vaulted Destiny 2 content is coming back. Campaigns, destinations, raids, all the stuff that got locked away when Bungie decided the game couldn’t carry its own history anymore and sunsetted it into oblivion. That decision always felt like a mistake, and it’s nice to see the people running the place now finally say so out loud. So obviously, the studio isn’t done with Destiny 2 yet.
Torkan and Deane didn’t sugarcoat how they got here either. Their words were that Bungie lost sight of its players over the last few years, and that trust has to be earned back through the quality of the games and the decisions the studio makes, not through a blog post. That’s the right instinct. Too many studios think an apology is the finish line instead of the starting gun. Now we’ll see if they can back up the talk. At least they didn’t have pronouns in the video.
The catch is this isn’t a flip of a switch. Bringing back vaulted raids and destinations means updating lighting, encounters, and combatant systems that have changed since Beyond Light, so we’re looking at a slow rollout with more details promised in the coming months. I’d rather they take the time and get it right than rush it out and give us another reason to be annoyed.
Then there’s Marathon. The extraction shooter launched to solid reviews but didn’t pull the numbers Bungie wanted, and now they’re pivoting it toward something closer to a deeper survival experience instead of staying boxed into the extraction genre. That’s a real swing, not a tweak. We’ve already got the October Nightfall Refresh and a December Symbiosis update on the calendar, and Bungie says more specifics on Marathon’s direction are coming from the team later this week.
Personally, while I actually did enjoy Marathon for a little while, I’d prefer they just wind down support of it and call it today. It’s never going to go up in popularity, and continuing forward with it is a waste of time and resources.
What stands out to me is the tone. This isn’t the usual Bungie corporate hedge speak, no “we hear you” nothing-statements. They named the mistake, they’re doing something concrete about it, and they laid out commitments they’re willing to be judged against later. Whether they actually hit those marks is the real test, and I’m not going to pretend a blog post fixes years of frustration. But this is the first update in a while that reads like it was written by people who actually want to fix things instead of just managing the narrative.
We’ll be watching how the unvaulting rolls out and what Marathon looks like once this “deeper survival experience” framing actually shows up in the game. Stay tuned.
