Farthest Frontier’s First DLC Adds Cats and Dogs on May 14
Crate Entertainment just announced Cats & Dogs, the first DLC for Farthest Frontier, launching May 14 on PC. It adds cats, dogs, new buildings, new threats, and new decorations to the medieval city builder. And yes, you can pet the dog.
Every new settlement will now start with either a cat or dog companion that traveled with your settlers across the wilderness. You can also purchase kennels and breed them, with 18 different variations possible between cats and dogs. These aren’t just cosmetic additions. Cats wander your settlement and keep rat populations under control. Dogs can be assigned to protect hunters, defend crops from deer, and guard livestock from the newly added foxes and groundhogs, both of which are new threats that can devastate your food production if left unchecked. Groundhogs infest crop fields and destroy yields. Foxes go after your chickens.
Crate CEO Arthur Bruno described the pets as filling the same roles they did historically, with cats handling pest control and dogs protecting against wildlife. He also mentioned that pets provide companionship to villagers and come with animated interactions including belly rubs, tricks, and pooping. That last one is peak city builder authenticity.
New buildings include Cat and Dog Kennels for feeding and caring for your animals, and a Doghouse that positions your dogs near crops and livestock where they’re most useful. On the decorative side, you’re getting a Hedge Garden, Topiary Garden, and Trellis, each with multiple variations.
This comes right on the heels of the v1.1 update that launched at the beginning of April, which added the Gridless build mode, a Guided Journey for new players, building management tools, and a stack of quality of life improvements. Crate has been on a roll with Farthest Frontier since the 1.0 release last October, and the pace of meaningful updates hasn’t slowed down.
Farthest Frontier is available on PC via Steam for $34.99. Cats & Dogs DLC pricing hasn’t been announced yet but should be available on the game’s Steam page closer to the May 14 launch.
