November is here.
Which means the part of the SEC volleyball season where we politely describe everything as “still developing” is over.
Florida is sitting at the top of the league. Kentucky finally stopped a two-match skid Friday night. Texas A&M has suddenly won four straight after looking shaky earlier in October. Tennessee just took its first loss in weeks. Vanderbilt is still ranked, Mississippi State has quietly started winning again, and Texas remains one of the strangest good teams in the country.
The calendar has reached the point where every loss starts costing something.
And Friday night gave us another reminder.
No. 4 Florida swept Auburn to continue its march through the conference. No. 7 Kentucky swept Missouri and finally snapped the Wildcats’ first two-match SEC losing streak in more than a decade. No. 17 Texas A&M knocked off No. 6 Tennessee in four sets, giving the Aggies another major win and stopping Tennessee’s seven-match winning streak. Vanderbilt swept South Carolina, Mississippi State swept Ole Miss, and Arkansas handled Oklahoma in four.
That creates a very interesting Sunday.
And one match stands comfortably above the rest.
SUNDAY — NOVEMBER 1
No. 17 Texas A&M at No. 14 Texas
12:00 PM CT — ABC — Austin, Texas
This is exactly what the Game of the Week is supposed to be.
Ranked teams.
Rivalry.
National television.
And both of them sitting at 7-3 in SEC play entering Sunday.
Texas A&M looked like it might be in real trouble a few weeks ago.
The Aggies lost to Oklahoma, Arkansas and Florida during a stretch that made the defending national champions look surprisingly vulnerable. Since then, they have found themselves.
They beat Auburn. They went to Lexington and swept Kentucky.
And Friday night they beat No. 6 Tennessee 3-1 in College Station, handing the Lady Vols their first loss after seven straight wins.
That is not a team limping into Austin.
That is a team walking in feeling very good about itself.
Texas has been living in a different kind of chaos all season.
The Longhorns are 11-7 overall, which still looks bizarre beside a No. 14 ranking, but the context matters. Texas has played one of the hardest schedules in the country, has been much more dangerous at Gregory Gym, and continues to show enough flashes to remind everybody why nobody wants to see this team in December.
The Longhorns also enter Sunday having swept Georgia Wednesday night.
So both teams are coming in hot.
And the stakes inside the SEC standings are real.
Florida has created some separation at the top, but the group behind the Gators is packed. Kentucky, Texas A&M, Texas, Tennessee and Vanderbilt are all close enough together that one weekend can reshuffle everything.
That makes this more than rivalry bragging rights.
This is about positioning.
The individual matchup is pretty good too.
Kyndal Stowers has been one of Texas A&M’s most reliable attackers, while Texas continues to lean heavily on Torrey Stafford offensively. Texas has the home floor, but A&M has been much better lately at handling pressure, particularly in big matches.
I keep coming back to the Kentucky result.
Going into Lexington and sweeping Kentucky is not something you accidentally do.
Then beating Tennessee five days later tells me the Aggies have found something.
Texas is dangerous enough to make this a five-set mess.
But A&M enters Austin playing its best volleyball of the season.
That makes this appointment viewing.
Why watch: Ranked rivalry, national television, identical SEC records and a defending national champion that has suddenly rediscovered its teeth.
Put it on the big television.
Arkansas at No. 4 Florida
12:00 PM CT — SEC Network+
Florida keeps making this look increasingly straightforward.
The Gators swept Auburn Friday night to improve to 9-1 in SEC play and remain in firm control of the conference race. That came after wins over Kentucky, Texas A&M, Texas, LSU and Ole Miss during a stretch where Florida has rarely looked rattled.
Arkansas at least arrives with some confidence.
The Razorbacks beat Oklahoma 3-1 Friday night, giving them another much-needed SEC victory and moving them to 3-7 in conference play.
But Gainesville is an entirely different assignment.
Florida has been brutal at home, the Gators are blocking everything in sight, and the offense has enough balance that opponents cannot simply key on one attacker and hope for the best.
Arkansas has improved.
Florida is still better.
Why watch: Florida has the lead now, and every match is another opportunity for someone to try taking a piece out of it.
No. 23 Vanderbilt at Georgia
1:00 PM CT — SEC Network+
Vanderbilt continues to be one of my favorite stories in the conference.
The Commodores swept South Carolina Friday and improved to 16-3 overall while continuing to sit comfortably in the upper half of the SEC standings.
Year two.
Still ridiculous.
Georgia is moving the other direction.
The Bulldogs have lost three straight after falling to Texas on Wednesday, and suddenly a team that spent much of October looking like one of the conference’s more dependable sides is trying to stop a real skid.
That makes this important for Georgia.
Vanderbilt is no longer the team you circle as a convenient bounce-back opportunity. The Commodores have already beaten quality opponents and have shown they can win away from Nashville.
Georgia needs the match.
Vanderbilt expects to win it.
That is a very different dynamic than we would have imagined in August.
Why watch: Georgia is trying to stop the bleeding against a Vanderbilt team that no longer surprises anybody.
No. 6 Tennessee at Missouri
2:00 PM CT — ESPN2
Friday hurt Tennessee.
The Lady Vols entered College Station riding a seven-match winning streak and left with a 3-1 loss to Texas A&M.
Now they get Missouri.
And Missouri is not exactly the easiest opponent to use as a recovery game.
The Tigers had won five straight before Kentucky swept them Friday night, which means both teams come into Sunday needing a response after seeing long winning streaks snapped.
That gives this one a little more edge than it had earlier in the week.
Tennessee still has the better résumé and deserves to be favored, but Missouri has shown that when the Tigers get rolling at home, they can make matches ugly.
The Lady Vols need to make sure Friday was one bad night rather than the beginning of a wobble.
Why watch: Two teams had winning streaks snapped Friday. One of them gets to restart immediately.
LSU at Ole Miss
2:00 PM CT — SEC Network+
Ole Miss desperately needs something good to happen.
The Rebels were swept by Mississippi State Friday night and have now lost eight straight conference matches. LSU has had its own uneven season, but the Tigers have at least shown signs of life recently and sit ahead of Ole Miss in the standings.
This is the kind of match where neither side can afford to spend too much time worrying about style points.
Ole Miss needs a win.
Any win.
LSU has an opportunity to take care of a struggling opponent and move itself closer to the middle of the SEC pack.
Why watch: Ole Miss has reached the point where ending the losing streak matters more than how it happens.
Oklahoma at Auburn
2:00 PM CT — SEC Network
Oklahoma remains one of the strangest teams in the conference.
The Sooners have wins over Texas A&M and Texas this season.
They also just lost to Arkansas.
That about sums it up.
Auburn has had an equally frustrating SEC season and enters Sunday at 2-8 in league play after being swept by Florida Friday night.
Somebody gets to feel better.
The question is which version of Oklahoma gets off the bus.
If the Sooners play like they did against Texas and A&M, they should win.
If they play like they did Friday, Auburn has every opportunity.
Why watch: Oklahoma remains capable of beating almost anybody and losing to almost anybody.
Mississippi State at Alabama
4:00 PM CT — SEC Network
Mississippi State may quietly be figuring things out again.
The Bulldogs swept Ole Miss Friday night and have now won three straight after a rough stretch earlier in October. Alabama, meanwhile, remains stuck at one conference victory and has lost five straight SEC matches.
The Tide keeps having stretches where the volleyball looks competitive.
The problem is finishing.
Mississippi State has finally rediscovered some of the confidence that made the Bulldogs one of September’s better stories, and that makes this a difficult matchup for Alabama even at home.
Still, Alabama needs to start treating every remaining match like an opportunity rather than another test. There is not much season left.
Why watch: Mississippi State is climbing again. Alabama is running out of chances to turn close matches into wins.
WEDNESDAY — NOVEMBER 4
Arkansas at LSU
6:00 PM CT — SEC Network
One match.
One television slot.
And two teams sitting in roughly the same neighborhood of the conference.
Arkansas enters Sunday at 3-7 in SEC play. LSU sits at 4-6. That makes Wednesday less glamorous than some of our standalone midweek matches, but arguably more important to the teams actually involved.
Neither program is fighting for first place.
Both are fighting for position before the SEC Tournament.
And when the middle of the standings gets compressed, these are exactly the matches that matter.
Arkansas showed something Friday against Oklahoma.
LSU gets the home floor.
This feels like five sets waiting to happen.
Why watch: Mid-table SEC survival with an entire Wednesday night to itself.
FRIDAY — NOVEMBER 6
Oklahoma at Ole Miss
3:00 PM CT — SEC Network+
This is an unusually early Friday start, and it brings together two teams that badly need consistency.
Ole Miss enters the week buried in a losing streak, while Oklahoma continues bouncing between impressive wins and baffling losses.
If Oklahoma handles Auburn Sunday, the Sooners can start building something again.
If Ole Miss beats LSU, the Rebels may finally arrive Friday with a little confidence.
Either way, somebody is getting a very useful SEC win before most people have finished work.
Why watch: The conference’s most unpredictable team meets the conference’s most desperate one.
Mississippi State at No. 6 Tennessee
5:30 PM CT — SEC Network+
Do not overlook this one.
Mississippi State is improving.
Tennessee is trying to stay in the championship race.
That is a dangerous combination.
The Bulldogs have won three straight entering Sunday and appear to have rediscovered some of the defensive discipline that made them so difficult earlier in the year. Tennessee remains one of the best teams in the conference, but the loss at Texas A&M showed the Lady Vols are not invulnerable.
By Friday, Tennessee will also have gone through Missouri.
This could either be a team reasserting itself or a team suddenly trying to stop a skid.
Why watch: Tennessee cannot afford another slip if Florida keeps winning.
Georgia at Auburn
6:00 PM CT — SEC Network+
Georgia’s week could go in two very different directions.
Beat Vanderbilt Sunday, and the Bulldogs arrive at Auburn with some confidence restored.
Lose again, and Friday becomes an uncomfortable attempt to avoid a five-match losing streak.
Auburn has struggled in conference play, but the Tigers have shown enough at home to make opponents work.
Georgia is the better team.
The question is whether the Bulldogs are still playing like it.
Why watch: Georgia needs stability before a rough stretch becomes the story of the season.
No. 4 Florida at South Carolina
6:00 PM CT — SEC Network+
Florida gets another road match, but at this point location does not seem to bother the Gators very much.
Florida has already won at Texas A&M, Texas and Auburn during this run, and South Carolina enters the week near the bottom of the league standings.
That makes this one pretty straightforward.
If Florida plays its game, Florida wins.
The danger is looking ahead.
November is here, the postseason is visible, and the SEC Tournament is only a few weeks away. Good teams sometimes get bored against opponents they are expected to beat.
Florida has not shown much of that tendency yet.
Why watch: The conference leader continues defending the top spot.
Texas at Missouri
7:00 PM CT — SEC Network+
This one could be excellent.
Texas begins the week at 7-3 in conference play and heads to Missouri after Sunday’s rivalry showdown with Texas A&M.
That Sunday result changes everything.
If Texas wins, the Longhorns arrive Friday with real momentum and a chance to stay near the top.
If they lose, Missouri becomes another uncomfortable road match against a team that recently won five straight.
Missouri gets the home floor.
Texas has the higher ceiling.
And neither team can afford to start giving away matches at this point of the season.
Why watch: This could be one of Friday night’s most competitive matches.
Alabama at No. 7 Kentucky
7:00 PM CT — SEC Network+
This is not kind scheduling.
Alabama is struggling through conference play.
Kentucky just snapped a two-match losing streak by sweeping Missouri and now gets several days to rest before the Tide arrives in Lexington.
Kentucky’s Friday performance mattered.
The Wildcats had not lost consecutive SEC matches in more than ten years, and after defeats to Tennessee and Texas A&M, the response against Missouri was exactly what you would expect from an elite program.
Morgan Gaerte had 19 kills.
Brooklyn DeLeye added 16.
Kentucky hit .327 as a team.
That looked much more familiar.
Alabama has shown enough fight this season to make sets competitive, but this is a very difficult place to ask the Tide to suddenly find answers.
Why watch: Kentucky appears to have steadied itself. Alabama gets the unpleasant job of testing whether that is true.
No. 17 Texas A&M at No. 23 Vanderbilt
7:00 PM CT — SEC Network+
This may be Friday’s best match.
Texas A&M will have already gone through Texas.
Vanderbilt will have already gone through Georgia.
And both enter the week sitting right in the thick of the crowded group behind Florida.
The Aggies are surging.
Vanderbilt continues to prove that nobody should treat the Commodores like a novelty anymore.
That makes Nashville a very interesting place Friday night.
A&M has the championship pedigree.
Vanderbilt has one of the best stories in college volleyball.
And neither side wants to give ground in the standings this late in the season.
Why watch: Two ranked teams, postseason implications and Vanderbilt continuing to act like it has been doing this for twenty years instead of two.
The first thing on my clipboard is Texas A&M.
Three weeks ago, I was wondering whether the defending national champions were starting to lose their footing.
Now?
They have beaten Georgia, Kentucky and Tennessee in consecutive matches.
Kentucky was a sweep.
Tennessee was ranked No. 6.
And now A&M gets Texas and Vanderbilt in the same week.
If the Aggies come through that stretch clean, we may be looking at the most dangerous team in the conference not named Florida.
The second story is Florida’s grip on first place.
The Gators are 9-1 in SEC play and have become remarkably boring in the best possible way. They show up. They block everything. They serve aggressively. They win.
That is what championship teams start looking like in November.
Then there is Kentucky.
The Wildcats finally responded Friday night after the first back-to-back SEC losses they had suffered in more than a decade. The sweep of Missouri mattered less because of Missouri and more because Kentucky needed to look like itself again.
It did.
And finally, I am watching Vanderbilt.
Still ranked.
Still winning.
Still somehow making the phrase “second-year SEC volleyball program” sound ridiculous.
The Commodores are 16-3 overall and now face Georgia before hosting Texas A&M.
That is a real measuring-stick week.
Not a novelty week.
Not a “good for them” week.
A real one.

Tennessee responding to a loss.
Vanderbilt somehow continuing to make this all look normal.
And November officially underway.
That will do.
Theia’s Game of the Week: No. 17 Texas A&M at No. 14 Texas.
Defending national champion.
Texas rivalry.
Austin.
ABC.
No argument from me.
See you on the court.
