Updated October 25, 2026 | PC and PlayStation 5 | Enshrouded 1.0.0.3
The kingdom of Embervale has fallen. A mysterious, deadly fog known as the Shroud has consumed much of the land, its inhabitants have been scattered or corrupted, and civilization has crumbled into ruins. But the Flameborn have awakened, and the fate of this broken kingdom is now in your hands.
Enshrouded combines open-world exploration, action RPG combat, crafting, settlement building, and survival mechanics into one enormous adventure. With the arrival of version 1.0 on October 15, 2026, the complete story, additional regions, expanded combat systems, and numerous quality-of-life improvements are finally available.
Whether you’re playing on PlayStation 5 or PC, this beginner’s guide will help you establish your first settlement, survive the Shroud, rescue essential survivors, develop your character, and begin exploring Embervale without feeling overwhelmed.
And we have more guides to come, so keep checking back as we progress and add new guides.
1. What Should You Do First?
After awakening in the Cinder Vault, follow the introductory objectives until you reach the location where you can establish your first base.
Your first major milestone is placing a Flame Altar, which requires five Stone. This establishes a protected building area and creates a fast-travel destination.
Don’t worry about finding the perfect location for your first settlement. The introductory area is perfectly suitable for learning the basics, and you’ll eventually be able to establish additional bases elsewhere.
Once your Flame Altar is placed, focus on gathering basic materials.
Essential early resources:
- Wood Logs: Collected by chopping trees.
- Stone: Gathered from rocks and loose stones.
- Plant Fiber: Obtained from vegetation.
- Twigs: Collected from bushes and other plants.
- Resin: Commonly obtained from trees.
- Metal Scraps: Found while exploring ruins and scavenging.
- Animal Fur: Obtained from wildlife and other sources.
- Shroud Spores: Dropped by certain enemies within the Shroud.
Wood, Stone, Plant Fiber, and Twigs should be your immediate priorities. There’s no need to fill your entire inventory before continuing the introductory quests.
2. Build a Workbench and Establish Your First Camp
Your first important crafting station is the Workbench.
Workbench recipe:
- 8 Wood
- 3 String
String is crafted using Plant Fiber. Once you’ve collected the required materials, create the Workbench through manual crafting and place it within your base.
The Workbench unlocks essential recipes, including building blocks and useful equipment.
It also repairs your equipment when you interact with it, making it one of the most convenient objects in your settlement.
Next, begin establishing a basic shelter. You can use a Construction Hammer to place building pieces, create walls and roofs, and gradually expand your home.
For your first settlement, prioritize a covered area, somewhere to sleep, warmth, and storage.
You don’t need an enormous fortress. Enshrouded doesn’t feature conventional enemy raids against your settlement, so defensive walls aren’t a pressing concern.
A small, comfortable home will serve you much better than an unfinished castle.
3. Understand Your Flame Altar
The Flame Altar is the heart of your settlement and one of the most important progression systems in Enshrouded.
It serves several purposes:
- Establishes a protected construction area.
- Provides a fast-travel destination.
- Allows you to strengthen your Flame.
- Allows you to upgrade the size of your building area.
- Lets you reset your character’s skill points using Runes.
Two different upgrade systems are particularly important.
Strengthen the Flame increases your overall Flame level, improves your ability to survive the Shroud, and helps unlock access to more dangerous areas.
Upgrade Altar increases the construction area protected by that particular altar.
The initial building area measures 40 × 40 × 40 blocks. Upgrading an individual altar expands that space, eventually allowing much larger settlements.
You can also establish additional Flame Altars as your global Flame level increases. By the end of version 1.0, the maximum number of active altars can reach 16.
Remember that construction and terrain changes outside protected Flame Altar areas can reset. Keep anything you want to preserve inside your claimed territory.
4. Rescue the Blacksmith
One of your earliest major quests is Find the Sleeping Survivor, which leads to the Blacksmith, Oswald Anders.
Follow the quest marker toward his Ancient Vault. Prepare before leaving your settlement by carrying a weapon, basic healing supplies, and food.
The journey introduces you to more of Embervale’s dangers, including hostile enemies and the Shroud.
Once you’ve reached the vault and awakened Oswald, return to your settlement and summon him using a Summoning Staff.
Summoning Staff recipe:
- 1 Twig
The Blacksmith provides important crafting services, including access to melee equipment, armor, and metalworking progression.
He also introduces additional quests and crafting objectives, including the Glider and Grappling Hook.
Rescuing the Blacksmith should be one of your highest early-game priorities.
5. Craft the Glider and Grappling Hook
Two pieces of equipment dramatically improve your ability to explore Embervale.
The Glider
The Glider allows you to descend from elevated locations and travel considerable distances through the air.
Basic Glider recipe:
- 8 Shroud Wood
- 2 Animal Fur
- 2 String
- 2 Shroud Spores
Craft it at the Workbench after unlocking the recipe.
Shroud Wood comes from trees within the Shroud, while Shroud Spores are obtained from certain corrupted enemies.
Once equipped, the Glider allows you to travel much farther than you could on foot, especially when launching from tall cliffs or Ancient Spires.
However, gliding consumes stamina. If your stamina runs out, the Glider retracts, potentially causing a dangerous fall.
The Grappling Hook
The Grappling Hook lets you cross gaps and reach locations equipped with designated grapple points.
Grappling Hook recipe:
- 4 Metal Scraps
- 7 String
- 10 Shroud Spores
Craft it at the Workbench and equip it in the appropriate equipment slot.
The Grappling Hook is particularly useful when exploring ruins, caves, and Ancient Spires.
Both tools are essential parts of your early progression. Don’t put off crafting them for too long.
6. How to Survive the Shroud
The Shroud is the supernatural fog covering large portions of Embervale. Entering it activates a countdown that limits how long you can safely remain inside.
At the beginning of the game, your protection typically lasts five minutes under default settings.
Once your protection expires, the Shroud becomes deadly.
Fortunately, there are ways to manage your survival time.
Leaving the Shroud restores your protection, and Return Beacons can replenish your timer while you’re exploring. Certain consumables can also help extend your expeditions.
Strengthening your Flame increases your maximum Shroud time and allows you to enter previously inaccessible areas.
Beware the red Deadly Shroud. These areas exceed your current protection level and can rapidly exhaust your survival time. Don’t attempt to push through them simply because your health is full.
When entering the Shroud, always have a specific objective and an escape route.
Shroud Roots and Elixir Wells
Throughout Embervale, you’ll encounter Shroud Roots and Elixir Wells.
These are valuable exploration objectives because clearing them rewards additional skill points.
Standalone Shroud Roots award one skill point, while Elixir Wells generally award three.
These rewards are earned once per character per location. You cannot repeatedly destroy the same root to farm unlimited skill points.
Some locations contain dangerous enemies or bosses, so prepare accordingly.
7. Food, Rested, and Comfort
Enshrouded approaches survival differently from games that constantly threaten you with starvation.
Under default settings, food primarily provides temporary bonuses to attributes such as health, stamina, and regeneration.
You can maintain up to three compatible food effects at once.
Experiment with different foods to discover combinations that suit your playstyle. Cooked meat can help improve survivability, while other foods and drinks offer different benefits.
The Rested bonus is equally important.
Resting in comfortable conditions improves stamina-related performance. Shelter, warmth, and furniture increase your Comfort, which helps extend the duration of Rested.
Even a simple home with a roof, a place to sleep, and a source of warmth can provide meaningful benefits.
Before a difficult expedition, make sure you’ve eaten useful food, repaired your equipment, and refreshed your Rested bonus.
8. Rescue the Other Crafting Survivors
The Blacksmith is only the beginning.
As you explore Embervale, you’ll discover additional survivors who expand your settlement’s capabilities.
Balthazar the Alchemist
Specializes in magical equipment, potions, spells, and alchemical crafting. Essential for players interested in magic.
Athalan Skree the Hunter
Provides ranged equipment, arrows, and access to important crafting systems involving animal materials and backpacks.
Cade Hawthorn the Carpenter
Unlocks additional furniture, storage, building materials, and construction-related crafting.
Emily Fray the Farmer
Introduces agricultural progression, cooking improvements, and the ability to develop a more reliable food supply.
These five core crafting survivors form the foundation of your settlement’s early development.
Additional survivors and specialized characters become available as you advance through the game.
Follow survivor quests whenever possible. Many important crafting recipes and stations depend on completing their objectives.
9. Choose Your Combat Style
Enshrouded doesn’t require you to choose a permanent character class.
Instead, you develop your character through equipment, attributes, and an interconnected skill tree.
Three broad approaches are especially beginner-friendly.
Melee Warrior
Melee characters use swords, shields, axes, and other close-range weapons.
This approach emphasizes blocking, parrying, positioning, and defensive skills.
A shield-equipped warrior is a solid beginner choice because it encourages you to learn enemy attack patterns.
Ranger
Ranged characters use bows, arrows, and mobility to defeat enemies from a distance.
Positioning is especially important, and you’ll need to manage your ammunition.
Ranged combat is useful for picking off enemies before entering dangerous areas.
Mage
Magical characters use wands, staves, spells, and specialized equipment.
Version 1.0 significantly expanded magical combat with nine new spell types, Eternal spell variants, and summoning abilities.
Magic offers tremendous flexibility, although unlocking equipment and advanced spells requires additional progression.
Recommended Early Skills
Double Jump is particularly valuable for exploration because it helps you reach difficult terrain and navigate ruins.
Merciless Attack is useful for characters who frequently overpower enemies, while Blink offers an alternative form of evasive movement.
The skill tree contains many options, so choose abilities that complement the weapons and tactics you’re actually using.
You can reset your skills at a Flame Altar by spending Runes. Experimentation is encouraged, and you don’t need to worry about permanently ruining your character.
10. Master the Basics of Combat
Combat in Enshrouded rewards patience more than reckless aggression.
Pay attention to enemy animations and learn when to attack, dodge, block, or parry.
A successful parry contributes to an enemy’s stun meter, potentially leaving them vulnerable to powerful follow-up attacks.
Avoid exhausting your stamina with constant attacks. You’ll need enough remaining to escape dangerous situations.
When facing groups, try separating enemies rather than charging directly into the middle of them.
Always examine new weapons and armor you discover. Treasure chests, ruins, and defeated enemies can provide valuable equipment that may outperform what you can currently craft.
Version 1.0 also rebalanced combat mechanics and introduced new enemy variants, so older Early Access builds and strategies may not perform exactly as they once did.
11. Expand Your Inventory and Storage
Inventory management becomes increasingly important as you explore.
Your starting backpack has limited capacity, and you’ll quickly begin collecting weapons, crafting ingredients, building materials, and quest items.
The Hunter unlocks important backpack-related progression, including recipes that use processed animal materials.
Pursue backpack upgrades as they become available and remember to equip them.
Back at your settlement, create storage chests and organize resources by category.
A useful arrangement is to separate building materials, food, equipment, and crafting ingredients.
Version 1.0 also introduced improvements to storage management, including the ability to upgrade certain chests in place.
Later, magical storage and additional convenience systems can make crafting and inventory management substantially easier.
12. Unlock Ancient Spires
Ancient Spires are enormous structures scattered across Embervale.
Reaching the top of an Ancient Spire unlocks a fast-travel point and provides an excellent location for launching your Glider.
The towers frequently contain climbing challenges, puzzles, traps, and other obstacles.
The Springlands Ancient Spire should be an early exploration goal.
As you unlock more Ancient Spires and establish additional Flame Altars, you’ll develop an increasingly useful fast-travel network.
This makes gathering resources, completing quests, and returning to previously explored regions considerably more convenient.
13. Explore Embervale at Your Own Pace
Embervale contains several major regions, each with distinctive environments, enemies, resources, and challenges.
Springlands: Your starting region, where you’ll establish your first base, rescue early survivors, and learn the game’s fundamental mechanics.
Revelwood: A forested region containing tougher enemies and valuable resources, including Copper Ore and Hardwood.
Blackmire: A swamp region featuring distinctive terrain, new resources, and additional survivor-related progression.
Nomad Highlands: A region of rugged terrain and advanced resource gathering, including materials associated with Bronze progression.
Kindlewastes: A dangerous desert region featuring challenging encounters and increasingly valuable resources.
Albaneve Summits: A mountainous region introducing freezing conditions and advanced equipment progression.
Veilwater Basin: A region associated with Enshrouded’s expanded water systems and later-game exploration.
Cinder’s Cradle: The major new region introduced in version 1.0, featuring volcanic landscapes, floating islands, dangerous enemies, and the concluding portion of the main story.
These regions aren’t all intended for immediate exploration. Some overlap in progression, and you’ll revisit earlier areas frequently.
Focus on developing your character and equipment before attempting increasingly dangerous territory.

15. Ten Beginner Mistakes to Avoid
1. Building too much too soon. Establish a functional settlement before attempting an elaborate castle.
2. Ignoring your Rested bonus. Comfort and stamina regeneration can make a substantial difference.
3. Entering the Shroud unprepared. Always monitor your timer and know how to escape.
4. Neglecting Flame upgrades. Strengthening the Flame is essential for progressing into more dangerous areas.
5. Forgetting to repair equipment. Visit your Workbench regularly to restore durability.
6. Ignoring survivor quests. Rescued craftspeople unlock major crafting and progression systems.
7. Carrying everything you own. Store unnecessary materials before difficult expeditions.
8. Delaying the Glider and Grappling Hook. These tools make exploration significantly easier.
9. Wasting all your stamina. Leave enough for defensive actions and emergency movement.
10. Rushing into advanced regions. If enemies are consistently overwhelming you, return to earlier areas and improve your equipment.
16. Recommended Beginner Progression
If you’re unsure what to prioritize, follow this general order.
Stage 1: Establish your first settlement. Place a Flame Altar, gather basic resources, and build a Workbench.
Stage 2: Prepare for exploration. Craft basic tools, acquire weapons and healing supplies, and establish somewhere to rest.
Stage 3: Rescue the Blacksmith. Complete the introductory survivor quest and unlock additional equipment and crafting opportunities.
Stage 4: Improve your mobility. Craft the Glider and Grappling Hook to make exploration easier.
Stage 5: Expand your settlement. Rescue additional craftspeople, establish their workstations, and improve storage.
Stage 6: Strengthen your character. Clear Shroud Roots and Elixir Wells, collect equipment, and develop your skill tree.
Stage 7: Strengthen the Flame. Gather the required materials to increase your Flame level and open additional areas.
Stage 8: Explore beyond the Springlands. Unlock Ancient Spires, establish new travel points, and gradually advance into more challenging regions.
This isn’t a rigid sequence. Enshrouded encourages exploration, and many objectives can be completed in different orders.
