Albion Online Is Now Available on Xbox Series X|S for Free
Albion Online, the player-driven sandbox MMORPG from Sandbox Interactive, launched on Xbox Series X|S today. The game is free-to-play and fully cross-platform with PC and mobile, sharing the same servers across all platforms.
If you’ve never heard of Albion Online, it’s been around since 2017 and has quietly built a dedicated following. The game is a medieval fantasy MMORPG where the economy is almost entirely player-driven. Nearly every item in the game is crafted by players from resources that were gathered and traded through a network of marketplaces. There are no traditional classes. Your abilities are determined by whatever gear you equip, which means you can change your entire playstyle by swapping your loadout. Want to be a healer today and a tank tomorrow? Just change your gear.
The Xbox release isn’t a stripped-down port. Sandbox Interactive made it clear that the full game is here, running on the same Americas, Europe, and Asia servers that PC and mobile players already use. Existing players can log into their Xbox and pick up right where they left off with no progress lost. New players can jump in with their Xbox account and immediately play alongside the existing playerbase across all platforms.
The studio built out proper controller support for the console launch. Key UI elements have been redesigned for console play, radial menus have been added, new accessibility options are in, and combat received specific attention to make sure controller players aren’t at a disadvantage against keyboard and mouse users. If you’d rather just plug a keyboard and mouse into your Xbox, that’s supported too.
What you’re getting into with Albion Online is a sandbox in the truest sense. There’s PvP ranging from full-loot zones (where dying means losing your gear) to more forgiving options. There’s PvE content. There are massive guild wars with coordinated battles. You can buy an island, farm crops, and sell your harvest at the marketplace. You can gather resources, craft gear, and become a merchant. The game gives you a world and lets you decide what you want to do in it.
Xbox Game Pass subscribers get some extra incentives: an Elite Green Knight vanity bundle exclusive to Game Pass players, three days of Premium status, and Fame books to help develop your skills early.
Albion Online is free-to-play and available now on Xbox Series X|S, PC, iOS, and Android. It should arrive on PS5 sometime next year.
