Revisiting Rayman Legends: A Classic 2D Platformer Experience – Patriot’s Playing Vol. XXIV, Week XL

This week, I’m spending the majority of my gaming time revisiting a classic 2D platformer, Rayman Legends.

I loved Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends back when they first came out and I played them on PS3. Despite having the PS4 version of Legends for quite some time, I’ve never bothered to play it until now. It’s been one of those backlog games, mainly since I had already played and enjoyed it once before.

So, it’s been fun revisiting the game. It came out in 2013, so it’s been over 10 years since I had last played it.

As much as I enjoyed Origins, I do think Legends was even better. In fact, I’d rank Legends as one of the greatest platformers ever made (2D or 3D). It’s definitely top five that I’ve played.

It’s a shame to see what has become of Ubisoft. In the PS3 era, they were killing it with something for everyone. Origins came out in 2011 and Legends in 2013. We’ve had nothing like this since then.

Considering all the trouble that Ubisoft is currently in, I think they’d do well to make a new Rayman game. They’d have to go out of their way to make it woke, so that shouldn’t be a problem. It’s also the type of game that doesn’t require hundreds of people working on it or hundreds of millions of dollars to make. And it’s sure to sell better than Star Wars Outlaws did/will. Basically, it’s a no brainer.

Playing through it again has been a blast, and I’m sure I’ll keep it rotation for the foreseeable future even with the expansion for Diablo IV coming out next week (as well as the new episode of Destiny 2, which I care much less about than ever before).

The game has that play a lot or just a little bit quality to it, which will make it perfect for shorter sessions in the weeks to come as I grind through Diablo IV Vessel of Hatred. Can hope on and do a few levels to get scratch off tickets to try and unlock more of the Back to Origins levels, or just do the daily challenge and be done.

Another big plus that’s going to keep this going in my rotation for a while is that it’s perfect for playing on the PlayStation Portal that I recently picked up. Can easily breeze through a level or do a challenge run during commercials of wrestling or college football games.

I don’t think I ever bothered with the Daily/Weekly challenges on the PS3 version, if I did, I certainly don’t remember (it’s been 11 years), but I’ve found them to be fun and challenging too. Granted, I just started back playing, so I’m still getting reacquainted with the feel of the game.

I like the challenges so much that, for the foreseeable future, I’m doing to do be daily run and uploading it my mostly abandoned YouTube channel that start to try to put at least a little time into. These probably won’t have any commentary, and likely won’t be longer than a minute or two. Starting it today with the Neverending Pit challenge:

All in all though, big of fan of the Rayman games and as much as I am enjoying reexperiencing Rayman Legends after so long, I do wish Ubisoft would make a new one as a direct sequel to Legends (and by extension Origins).

These are such fun games, and so well done, that it’s a shame we haven’t had a new one in 11 years. There’s a market for platformers, 2D and 3D, as the recent Astro Bot clearly shows, and I just don’t get why Ubisoft throws massive amounts of money at crap that flops and leaves this franchise just sitting there.

Stop making bloated, woke open world games Ubisoft and give us some smaller 2D platformers in the Rayman Legends style. For that matter, I wouldn’t mind seeing what a talented studio could do with a Rayman 3D platformer too (but not at the expense of a 2D sequel). I want both, but if I could only get one, I’d want it to be 2D.

In addition to Rayman Legends, this week I also tried out the new free-to-play MMORPG Throne and Liberty. I played about 15 minutes, and quickly saw that it wasn’t for me. I didn’t like the combat, look or feel of the game, so I bounced and deleted it. Too bad. Also playing a little bit of Destiny 2, still probably won’t make it to season rank 200, but oh well, and also a little WWE 2K24. Started up Doki Doki Literature Club on PS5 too, though I have already played it on Steam.

Next week, I’ll mostly be on Diablo IV: Vessel of Hatred, which I’ll write up my thoughts on that in another quicker Patriot’s Playing sometime next Wednesday or Thursday. Will definitely still be working through Rayman Legends and doing the daily challenges and will also check out the new episode in Destiny 2 just out of habit really.

That’s all for this week, the first week bringing back the old Patriot’s Playing column. What are you playing this week? Sound off in the comments below and let me know.
